A Return

For a while now I've been craving the slower pace and more detailed platform of a blog. I abandoned my first blog a few years ago after becoming entangled in Facebook, Instagram, and other simple, more immediate social media platforms. But I have also struggled with whether what I want to write is anything someone would care to read. I realize friends and family will read it, but my insecurities lead me to question if they'll read out of a sense of obligation, or would they be interested in what I have to say? Interested as in would they find it useful, funny, thought provoking, motivational, or whatever I might intend for it to be.

Nowadays we can find countless blogs and channels covering travel, lifestyle, cooking, fashion, fitness, you name it. This added to my insecurity about returning to my blog. Why would someone want to read yet another post about a recipe or see another food photo? Or yet another story about my rescue dogs and animal advocacy? Why would anyone care to know my thoughts on exercise and fitness when they can follow glammed-up, high profile, gorgeous fitness accounts? Who needs to read yet another "this is where you should eat when traveling in Rome" essay?

I found myself writing posts and editing them so many times they didn't even resemble the initial draft. I shifted topics and subjects until it made me dizzy. Overthinking became my name. I finally admitted to myself that what I was doing was procrastinating in order to avoid the fear of trying my hand at this again, and then possibly failing. I don't know where that fear is coming from but it's here and it's present within me. Especially since blogging isn't a concept that "fails" or "passes."

And that's when I had to remind myself WHY I loved having a blog and why I've been craving a return to it...

...because I love to write. I always have and I always will. And I love detailed writing, complete with history and anecdotes and references and explanations, to name a few. On social media platforms I often find myself unable to post witty, short captions with clever hashtags. No matter what I always end up writing a "novella" for a simple Facebook or Instagram post, something that is the subject of much mockery from my friends and family.

Writing and posting to my blog was an intellectual and relaxing release for me. A blog provided a wonderful medium through which I could take my time and tell a tale. Since the dawn of time humans have wanted to share their life stories. Look around next time you're at a museum. As you browse ancient pottery, urns, canvases, stones, and even coffins, all you see is drawings and words describing and depicting life. Scenes as mundane as a dinner table spread or as grand as a king's ceremony are shared in whatever medium was available for the time. The medium available to us now is much more immediate and is shared instantaneously, but the concept remains the same. We want to share our stories. And this is me returning to share my favorite ones, through blogging.

For those of you who find me here, welcome! I hope you'll enjoy being with me in this space. My dog, Winston Churchill, also has his own story telling section. He sure has a lot to say. With a British accent, of course.

I hope you'll stay tuned.
